𝗢𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆, 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The Government’s renewed commitment coincides with the global celebration of International Equal Pay Day on Friday, September 18, 2026. The Day, annually celebrated on September 18, was established by the United Nations General Assembly on November 15, 2019, and was first observed on September 18, 2020.

The annual celebration of International Equal Pay Day represents longstanding efforts toward the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value for both male and female. It further builds on the United Nations’ commitment to human rights and actions against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls.

In Liberia, the Government’s commitment to equal pay for work of equal value was reaffirmed by the Acting Director-General of the Civil Service Agency, Hon. Edwin K. Jallah, during an interview on State media, the Liberia National Television (LNTV), in Paynesville on Friday, September 18, 2026. “Whilst there remains room for improvement, the Government of Liberia is currently administering equity in wage dispensation between male and female workers. A female director in the public service is paid the same salary as her male counterpart performing similar tasks.”

Mr. Jallah lamented that Liberia’s biggest challenge remains the duality of the frameworks guiding human resource administration in Liberia that makes it difficult for our data to make its way on the pages of international reports. While the civil service is guided by the Standing Orders for the Civil Service, the private sector operates under the Decent Work Act.

He indicated that plans are underway for collaboration between the CSA and the Ministry of Labor to organize a national labor conference that will address this issue and bring the two sectors under a harmonized framework.

Hon. Jallah said recently the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection disclosed that about 47.3 percent of women have been appointed to Cabinet-level positions under the Government of His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia.

That, according to him, is a practical example of the Government’s commitment to promoting gender equity in pay and eradicating all factors that influence any existing pay gap.

The CSA Acting Director-General stated that the goal of International Equal Pay Day is to raise awareness and catalyze actions that lead to a more equitable and inclusive workforce, where equal pay for equal work is the standard.
