The Civil Service Agency (CSA) has solidified its dedication to employee health and wellbeing through a series of transformative initiatives. Partnering with Jahmale Health Center, the CSA organized a medical outreach program on March 25, 2025, under the auspices of its Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division. The initiative was designed to promote health awareness, provide medical lectures, and deliver tailored medical examinations for CSA staff, with the Director General emphasizing the initiative’s importance to employees.

In his opening address, Hon. Josiah F. Joekai, Jr. underscored the vital role of a healthy workforce in driving exceptional performance. He commended the OHS Division, led by Director Cherie Watkins, for spearheading such a meaningful program and encouraged employees to make full use of the resources available. “A healthy workforce is the cornerstone of productivity and excellence,” he remarked.

A highlight of the event was an in-depth presentation by Dr. Konowa, head of the visiting medical team. Dr. Konowa addressed pressing health issues such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, hypertension, high cholesterol, and thyroid disease, while stressing the importance of early detection and personalized care. His multidisciplinary team, featuring specialists in oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology, also provided consultations and examinations, ensuring a holistic approach to staff healthcare.

CSA staff actively participated in the consultations, demonstrating their appreciation for the initiative. Director Cherie Watkins expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support from Hon. Joekai and CSA management. She also shared plans to expand similar health and safety programs in the near future, reiterating the agency’s ongoing commitment to employee wellness.

Building on these efforts, the CSA has introduced a pioneering occupational health program under the leadership of Mrs. Watkins. The program aims to foster hazard-free work environments and enhance staff wellbeing. Plans are underway for regular wellness activities, subject to the availability of medical professionals and partnerships with health institutions. The next scheduled event in May will address prevalent health concerns such as hypertension and diabetes.

In a separate interview, Mrs. Watkins reaffirmed her determination to advance the occupational health program and expressed optimism about extending its reach to Liberia’s Ministries, Agencies, and Commissions (MACs). “Our ultimate goal is to ensure the wellbeing of all civil servants,” she stated confidently.

Through these combined efforts, the CSA is setting new benchmarks for workplace health and safety, demonstrating its commitment to building a thriving, productive workforce. These initiatives highlight a promising future for occupational health practices across Liberia’s civil service.
